REVIEWS
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow through the library's grand windows, an eager audience gathered for our regular and much-anticipated Last Friday music night. The evening promised a musical journey led by accomplished flautist Sarah Parkes-Bowen and masterful pianist Oli Cuttriss. With a programme dedicated exclusively to the works of female composers through the ages, the duo set the stage for a night filled with inspiration and discovery.
From the first note, Sarah's flute sang with a pure, clear voice. Oli's piano, meanwhile, provided a rich and resonant counterpart, each chord resonating with warmth and depth. Together, their synergy was palpable, a dance of sound that kept the audience rapt with attention throughout. It's fair to say Cricklewood was captivated!
The repertoire was a celebration of diversity and talent, featuring compositions that spanned eras and styles—from the intricate and emotive works of Mel Bonis and Cécile Chaminade to the vibrant and contemporary pieces by Valerie Coleman and Katherine Hoover. Each selection was a testament to the brilliance and creativity of female composers, often overlooked but undeniably pivotal in the tapestry of music history.
Sarah and Oli's performance was nothing short of magical. It was a performance that touched everyone, from the seasoned concertgoer to the curious first-timer, fostering a shared experience of wonder and appreciation.
As the last notes lingered in the air, a palpable sense of connection filled the room. Applause erupted, a heartfelt ovation for two consummate performers who had just gifted the audience an unforgettable evening. In those moments, the library transformed into a haven of culture and community, where music spoke the universal language of the soul. We look forward to welcoming them back again soon.
